Permit & Code Compliance
In Calgary, childcare and learning facilities must comply with multiple levels of regulatory oversight, including Alberta Building Code, Alberta Fire Code, and City of Calgary Land Use Bylaw. Westaim ensures all projects meet the following key requirements:
- Barrier-Free Accessibility: All public and child-access areas must comply with universal design principles, including ramps, door clearances, and accessible washroom features.
- Fire Separation and Egress: Class A daycare occupancies require proper fire-rated wall assemblies and direct exits to the exterior.
- Child Safety Fixtures: Washroom fittings, storage, and classroom furniture must meet CSA standards for children’s use.
- Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality: Mechanical systems must provide sufficient air changes per hour (ACH) for occupied spaces as per local HVAC codes.
- Outdoor Play Areas: If included, outdoor zones must be fenced and surfaced with CSA-approved shock-absorbing material, meeting AHS regulations.
